And the apprentice is setting up to lay out stair stringers for the first time. Where do your first ten minutes go?

Lay out the first stringer with the apprentice yourself. It's his first time, and you know stairs best.

Point the driver to the drop spot, tell the carpenter walls first, then spend five minutes with the apprentice before he cuts.

Pull everyone into a quick huddle to plan the day, then deal with the truck.

Ask what would make this work for him. Then listen without arguing.

Give him something real to own. The stair layout on the next phase, and teaching the apprentice stringers.

Check his work every day, the same as everybody's. When something's wrong, he's the one who fixes it. If it keeps happening, it becomes a conversation for the office.
